A1079 news: Response to the proposal to build 325 houses in Market Weighton

Recognising that the A1079 is the 7th most dangerous road in the United Kingdom (source: Road Safety Foundation for the European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP)) and already exceeds its design loading, Action Access A1079 has campaigned for some time to have the road developed and improved. This campaign has been taken to the highest levels of UK Government and questions have been asked in the House of Commons. At least two parliamentary debates have been held on the subject. There is strong agreement within ERYC that the road should be improved and meetings have also been held between the action group and the Regional Transport Board.

The aims of the campaign are to make the road safer, to ease congestion and help the local communities to become more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

Employment opportunities along the A1079 are currently limited and therefore most people have to commute some distance to find work. There is certainly insufficient work for the residents of 325 new houses within Market Weighton and therefore it would be expected that most, if not all, would have to commute. Market Weighton is ideally placed for commuters to Beverley, Hull, York and the M62 corridor. In addition to all the towns and villages along the A1079 itself, it could be expected that there will be increased commuter traffic through Sancton, North Newbald, South Cave, North Cliffe, South Cliffe, North Cave, Holme upon Spalding Moor and Howden. In the modern world, it could be expected that 325 houses would generate in the order of 500 extra cars most of which would be likely to access the A1079 during peak travel times

Action Access A1079 welcomes the building of a new roundabout at the Holme Road junction as it is believed that this will improve access. It is imperative that this is completed prior to the development of any housing. Action Access A1079 calls for the Government at local, regional and national level to recognise that any further significant development of new homes should only be built along the A1079 corridor subject to their commitment to ensure that there is investment in transport and business infrastructure. Without this investment, the road will become more dangerous and the region will become increasingly unsustainable as access for public transport, business and social use will become more and more difficult.
