A1079 news: A1079 debated in Parliament

Local MP Graham Stuart led a debate in the House of Commons today about the sorry state of transport infrastructure in Yorkshire and Humber. He particularly called into question the dreadful transport funding situation, because the region receives less government spending per head of population than anywhere else in the UK. Traffic volumes are growing considerably – partly because of good economic growth in the region and partly because central government policy on building new houses has meant that the A1079 corridor in particular has one of the fastest growing populations in the country.

Focussing in particular on the A1079 Graham Stuart stated “it is one of the most dangerous roads, not just in Yorkshire, but in the country as a whole”. He went on to draw attention to the recent serious crashes at Wilberfoss and Shiptonthorpe, and mentioned the view of East Riding Council that the road was operating “near to its theoretical capacity for a single carriageway of its width and characteristics”.

He concluded the debate by calling on the government to explain why Yorkshire receives less transport funding than any other region – only 70% of the average received in the rest of England.

A full report of the debate can be viewed on the Hansard website - this is essential reading for anyone concerned about the future of transport infrastruture in our region.
