A1079 news: A1079 is the 7th most dangerous road in the UK - official

According to a recent report by Road Safety Foundation for the European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP) the section of the A1079 between Market Weighton and Hull has joined the dubious ranks of the top 10 most dangerous roads in the UK.

Grahame Hicks, the Chairman of the Action-Access-A1079 campaign commented: "This report is a strong message that the road must be upgraded. The local authorities want to do it, they just need the money. And that is down to central government."

The campaign group is carrying out research to find out why the A1079 is so dangerous. One of the contributory causes is thought to be the increasing number of new commuter houses being built along the route, giving the A1079 corridor the second-fastest population growth in the UK outside of London over the last 10 years, and putting pressure on local infrastructure including the A1079. Although the local authorities and the Highways Agency have made a number of improvements over the years, the A1079 remains a single-carriageway for most of its route, with numerous side-roads and junctions and a bewildering array of speed limits.

Grahame Hicks added: "The local authorities along the route of the A1079 recognise that something has to be done, and central government is getting the message that development in the A1079 corridor must be sustainable.  We are confident that major upgrades will be planned in the next 5 years to cope with the growing economic activity in the region. This will help reduce congestion and - more importantly - make the road safer."
